One of the biggest perks of shooting weddings is getting to capture raw emotions. The pics below are the cherry on top. Kyle gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse. After much careful planning it seemed like I was a part of a secret mission. No joke, I was nervous as hell.
Kara & Kyle spent a few days in Ottawa for Kara’s graduation from med school. The idea was to take Kara to a beautiful park across the parliament buildings following her graduation and to get a lovely backdrop for the proposal. Simple enough right… Being the thoughtful person he is, Kyle purchased a series of gifts to give Kara before the ring. This is where I came in.
I met Kyle’s father the night before my flight and was given an identical backpack to the one Kyle had with him in Ottawa. We met up in a busy plaza and exchanged the goods in his car. Shady? nah. From that moment on, my life’s goal was to guard the package with my life. Easy peasy lemon squeezy… The hurdles began the next day at YYZ. Our beloved airport is proud to boast some of the longest security wait times in the universe. As I approached the front of the line, the nice airport employee swabbed my hand and walked away. Keep in the mind I’d been standing in line for about 45 mins and boarding was in 15mins. When I get nervous my forehead starts to sweat… at this point it was starting to glisten.
Remember that lovely gentleman that took a sample? I felt his gaze from afar and sensed him approaching. “come with me” he said. As I followed him he whispered to his peers “alarm”… wtf. I was told to drop my bags and walk over to get searched. A few questions followed and if I seemed nervous it was because the bag that I was guarding with my life was out of sight. I so desperately wanted to yell “make sure nobody touches that bag. It’s got a special package inside” Instead I settled for looking back like a crazy person making sure nobody touched it. A few minutes, pat downs and questions later I emerged unscathed. My forehead was sweating as I sped to the gate. Upon arrival to the gate I swore everyone was looking at me. Did I mention that I dressed in my spy clothes because Kara seemed familiar, maybe from past weddings… who knows. So we can’t really blame the people for thinking the gentleman with two backpacks wearing baseball cap barely covering his eyes would seem suspicious.
I made it to Ottawa in one piece. Jumped in a cab and made it safely to the Museum that Kyle scouted. The view was beautiful, Kyle’s the man! The forecast wasn’t playing in our favour. It was on the brink of pouring. Plenty of tourists roamed the park and I had plenty of time to practice my role as the loner tourist taking pics of everything in sight. With every minute that passed I became more nervous and started to question how Kyle would switch the backpacks without Kara noticing. This was the most crucial part of the proposal.

Game time! He noticed me from far and my job from here was to lead him to the perfect spot. I turned around and walked down the grass closer to the water. As if I was about to take a few pictures, I dropped my camera bag and placed the ring bag right behind it so it wouldn’t be visible to Kara. Kyle was a few feet away and I swear I’ve never been so nervous in my life. He was standing in front of Kara, looked at me and said “excuse me, do you mind taking a picture of us with my camera?” He smirked and I was so close to bursting out in laughter. The headlines would have read “Photographer ruins surprise proposal, moves to Antarctica. Takes pictures of ice.” I’m one of those people, that if you smile at me, I’ll always smile back. It’s like this sort of chemical reaction. I tensed up and forced the smile back inside my gut. I made no eye contact with Kara and replied to Kyle “where do you want me to take it? down there” as I pointed to the perfect spot. “Sure” he replied. Kyle let Kara walk 2 steps ahead as he placed all his stuff down right by mine. With the precision of a surgeon he pulled off the bag switch with even me barely noticing. I walked them down to the water and took a few pics with his camera. It was time for me to step back and go far enough to not interfere.
We were in the clear! my job was almost done… NOT! A few tourists also showed up to the park at the same time and saw me snap those pics of Kara & Kyle. As I was walking away they intercepted me and asked me to take pics of them with their Ipad. An Ipad is the most ridiculous camera of all time! but that’s a story for a later date. Of course they wanted it to be taken in the same spot I took the previous pics. The tourists were so kind and pleasant but I wanted none of it. I grabbed the Ipad as quick as possible and took a picture without them being ready. I wasn’t even looking at it because I saw Kyle reaching into his bag. I resisted the urge to throw the Ipad in the water, instead I gently shoved the Ipad back in their hands and started flinging my hands like a crazy person. Again I felt the urge to yell “get outta here, scram.” Acting crazy worked, they started retreating with their Ipad close to their chest.
The coast was clear. Kyle grabbed the ring and the rest is history. She said YESSSS!
Cheers and thanks always for coming by,
